So, I was a little annoyed to learn last Friday that a cat was under our deck giving birth to kittens. Great.
I called Animal Control and they gave me a couple of options. 1) They could come out to my house, tear up the part of my deck where the kittens were underneath, get the momma cat and kittens and take them to the shelter. Or, 2) I could feed momma cat for a couple of weeks so she wouldn't die since she won't stray far from her kitties, and once they got a little older and she moved them out from underneath the deck I could "trap" them (with an animal control provided trap) and Animal Control would come pick them up.
Tearing up the deck? Yeah, no thanks. I chose number 2.
I've checked on them every day since and the momma cat has been in the same spot every time. I've left food and water out for her at the spot where she went under the deck and she has come out and eaten, but goes right back to her kitties.
BUT....we've gotten over EIGHT inches of water today. The news is calling this the heaviest rain Lubbock has ever gotten in the history of Lubbock (or Luppock....see previous post). It's been raining non-stop all day and it's 10 pm and still pouring. They've even canceled all schools and daycare for tomorrow.
I looked out at our almost-flooded backyard this evening and saw momma cat hiding outside the underneath the deck, but under the part that juts out a little.
Which makes me think that the only way she came out is because her babies have died. I just don't think there's any way they survived. It has rained so hard all day long and they weren't even a week old. :(
Poor momma cat....
Here she is hiding under the deck. She's on the far left.
Here's a closer look.
This was our backyard about 3 inches of rain ago.

You mean Lar Bear doesn't even put a soft spot in heart? That's ok, he's the only cat I've ever liked.
And, super sad story...maybe she was just checking out all the noise and her kittens will be alright.
why oh why oh why would you post this knowing that i read your blog.
....also, i seem to remember you pushing coots off the banister upstairs down to the first floor on Pinehurst....
This blog made me sad! Maybe the water is not pooling as much under the deck. Hopefully, the deck provides a shelter for the little ones.
NOOOOOO! Courtney, get under there and see if you can rescue them!
I laughed at how you hate cats until I read about the kitties. SO sad! Please keep us updated!
