if you can.
My dear blog readers, I need your suggestions.
Jeff and I are going on vacation in a couple of weeks and I need some book recommendations.
While I appreciate any and all suggestions, here's a little bit about my reading preference:
** I'm ashamedly not much of a "book" person. I'm ashamedly more of a "TV" person. That being said, I don't really want a book that "starts out slow, but gets good after 100 pages". Uh uh. If it's not good by page 5, I'm done.
**I've pretty much hated almost all Oprah book club books. They generally have too many pages, too many hard words, and too much thinking involved (i.e. Anna Karenina or The Poisonwood Bible). I don't want to need a dictionary handy to read a piece of fiction. I know all of the words that I want to know.
**I want a good book, but not a "heavy" book. Meaning, I don't want to be sad that Bill lost his family in a car accident, his house burned down, his dog ran away and he was layed-off from his job all in the same week.
**Please, please, please don't tell me to read the Twilight or Harry Potter books. I KNOW that they're the best books that have ever been written in the history of history and I promise to read them some day, but vampires and wizards don't belong in my pina colada/Carribbean sun/reggae- music- background ambience.
So, there you have it.
Any suggestions?

Courtney - you must read The Glass Castle. Ryan read it and liked it too...it's good from page 1.
Have fun on vacation!!
I highly recommend The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I read it this earlier this summer, and loved it so much that we are doing it for book club next month. All my book clubbers said it was one of their favorites evah. It is funny, light, at times sad and also makes you think. BTW-I also loved The Glass Castle, but it is a little sad.
I like Jodi Piccoult -- they are always hard for me to put down.
If you want something beachy though, I love Meg Cabot books. Boy Meets Girl, Queen of Babble, Size 12 is not fat, The boy next door, etc. They are all very lighthearted, non-thinking books that make you laugh.
Hope that helps!
I got nothing - I finally broke down and started reading Twilight when Nate and I went to New York 2 weeks ago...I am on book 3. I am one of those people.
I've never commented before but I've been reading your blog for a while...I knew of your sister at acu. I've been reading some books by Rachel Hauck, she has 4 books I've read that are all good. Nothing deep but with a Christian spin in it. I found them at mardel. Very easy read. I hated the twilight book.
I always like Jane Green's books. Very lighthearted and funny.
Read the first sentence of The Glass Castle. That should answer your question.
I'm Leslie, I just found your blog. I haven't read them, but saw on another blog just tonight that "Something Borrowed" and the sequel, "Something Blue" are supposed to be good books. Seem like an easy read. Also, I was very skeptical of reading a vampire book, and was only going to read a few chapters to appease my sister in law, BUT I could not put the book down. It is an easy read, and surprisingly good.
Here are some authors that I really like (and fit your requirments). These are just fun "chick lit" and I've tested them while relaxing...on a beach...with a pina colada!
Sweet Potato Queen Books (you will laugh and laugh and laugh)
Emily Giffin
Jane Green
Jennifer Weiner
Phillipa Gregory (if you like English History)
The author who wrote the Ya Ya Sisterhood has a new book
I agree with Kara. I love Emily Giffin. She does "Something Borrowed", "Something Blue" and "Baby Proof" Start with "Something Borrowed", but you need to take "Something Blue" with you because they are quick reads.
I also like Jennifer Weiner and Sophie Kinsella. They both have new books out. I love Jodi Piccoult, but they are not beach reads and don't fit your criteria. I always end up crying in the end.
I could go on and on, but I will stop. If you want more just email me.
Fun, light beach books:
-The Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella
-Good in Bed by Jennifer Weiner
oh, just read your comments and these have all been suggested. Well, anything by Sophie Kinsella, Meg Cabot, or Jennifer Weiner are all light, fun reads.
I totally agree about Emily Giffin -- Something Borrowed and Something Blue are great. I think I read Something Blue (the 2nd one) on one long plane flight it was so good I couldn't put it down. Def get both of them though bc you can read them both fairly quickly. I haven't read any recent books lately unfortunately! No time with a 21 month old :) Have a great vacation!
I have one for Jeff Blind Side by Michael Lewis!
Storytelling- by Tori Spelling
Don't judge me- I loved 90210, and I have become addicted to Tori and Dean. You can read it in a few hours, and then move on to real literature if you want!
Jennifer Weiner is great. :)
I love this post! This helps me too! I am reading Lonesome Dove right now and I can't put it down. Yes, it is almost a thousand pages but it is an easy read!!
